Lecture by Marija Drėmaitė “Klaipėda Marriage Palace – micro-histories of the city’s architecture”
Participants: historian of culture and architecture, author of books, curator of exhibitions, professor at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University Marija Drėmaitė.
Marriage halls were built in many Lithuanian cities during the Soviet era.
They were distinguished by their individual design, splendour, synthesis of the arts and distinctive, newly constructed ceremonial traditions.
Klaipėda Civil Registry House, built in 1979-1980.
The building, designed by architect Ramūnas Kraniauskas, is characterised by its original architecture, typical of late modernism and brutalism.
The austere façades conceal a rich interior with luxurious materials, uniquely designed furniture, chandeliers, sculptures, sculptures, tapestries, stained-glass windows, and other works of art created by famous artists of the time.
Today, this building raises questions not only of architectural value.
By delving into the micro-histories of the architectural heritage, the lecture will seek to reveal several perspectives on the palace, interpreting the building not only as a site of a new secular ritual, but also as a space for the transfer of vernacular traditions to the city.
Part of the project “Phenomenon M”.
