Discussion “Are There Limits to Free Speech?”
Participants: comedian and presenter Algis Ramanauskas; journalist and presenter Rimas Šapauskas; writer and literary scholar Dr Rimantas Kmita. Moderator: poet and philosopher Dr Aušra Kaziliūnaitė.
Algis Ramanauskas and Rimas Šapauskas, creators of the cult programme “Radioshow”, famously mocked social stereotypes, foolish principles, narrow-mindedness and excessive patriotism. Writer Rimantas Kmita’s work, including the novel “Pietinia Kronikas”, has drawn attention to twentieth-century Lithuanian life, Soviet-era cultural phenomena and transformations of identity. Moderated by philosopher and poet Aušra Kaziliūnaitė, the discussion will focus on free speech in radio and literature. Is the spoken or the written word freer – and which is more powerful? How does a particular era shape its circulation? Are there limits when words are used in the arena of political satire?
