Uwe Jurgsties

Uwe Jurgsties – Chairman of the AdM (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Memellandkreise e.V.), member of the Council for Friendship and Cooperation between Mannheim and Klaipėda, Honorary Citizen of Klaipėda. He was born in Fuerstenau, Lower Saxony, in a family of emigrants from the Klaipėda region, on 2 September 1949.
In 1973 he was elected a member of the Council of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Memellandkreise e.V. (AdM), in 1983 he was elected Vice-Chairman, and in 1989 he was elected Chairman of AdM. Since 1989, Jurkštys has organised 12 truckloads of humanitarian aid to the Klaipėda Region. The shipments were destined for hospitals, old people’s shelters, and “Sandora”. Building materials for the restoration of churches.
In 1992, on the initiative of AdM, a meaningful monument was erected in the Sculpture Park (the former city cemetery) to commemorate the memory of all those who rested in peace. In the same year, a model of Klaipėda’s Old Town was brought to the Museum of the History of Lithuania Minor and donated to the Museum. In 2002, on the occasion of the jubilee of the city of Klaipėda, the sculpture “Farewell” was erected at the railway station, with the help of the AdM and on the initiative of the Chairman.
In 2011, on the initiative of Jurgštis, the archives of the AdM Society were handed over to the Klaipėda County Ieva Simonaitytė Public Library. The transfer of the archive is an important event not only for the library but also for the city. The archive has significantly contributed to the historical memory of the city and the region.
